Cloutier backstops the Hogs to their fifth straight win

Rockford, Ill.- For the second straight Saturday the Rockford IceHogs took care of the top team in the United Hockey League. On this night, it was a 5-1 win over the Muskegon Fury in front of 5,384 at the Rockford MetroCentre. Rockford broke the game open with a four-goal third period and goalie Frederic Cloutier was solid making 25 saves to earn the win.

Evened up at 1-1 at the beginning of the third period, the Hogs started picking the Fury apart mid way through the frame. Defenseman Matt Gens netted the eventual game-winning goal seconds after a power play had expired when his snap shot from the point beat Fury goalie Clayton Pool over the shoulder at 8:05. Winger Jason Ralph extended Rockford's lead to 3-1 when he deflected a loose into the net at 9:13, set up by Jason Notermann and Dan Boeser.

Notermann was then on the receiving end of a cross-ice feed from Preston Mizzi and he potted his seventh goal of the season at 11:23, pushing the IceHogs lead to 4-1. Defenseman Tim Wedderburn finished the scoring and the Fury as he banked home an empty-net short-handed tally at 19:35. The goal for Wedderburn was his first of the season.

In the opening period Rockford grabbed the 1-0 lead. On a 5-on-3 power play, defenseman Nathan Lutz's rocket from the point put the Hogs on top. Mizzi assisted on the goal to extend his point streak to 12-straight games, tying an IceHogs record. Muskegon tied the contest late in the second period with a power-play goal of its own. Winger Rustyn Dolyny buried a rebound past Cloutier for his 18th marker of the campaign at 19:36.

Both teams finished the night 1-for-10 on the power play. Pool turned away 19 IceHogs shots in the loss. Winger Bryce Cockburn assisted on Gens goal to extend his point streak to 10-straight games. Rockford's win extended its win streak to a season-high five games and pushed its home win streak to a club record tying seven.

Next Homestand: Friday, Feb. 16 vs. Chicago Hounds. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Hogs ands Hounds meet up once again at the Rockford MetroCentre. The first 1,000 fans to the game will pick up an IceHogs Draw String Bag from Power Connection.

Saturday, Feb. 17 vs. Quad City Mallards. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. One of the fiercest rivalries in the UHL returns to the MetroCentre. The Hogs and Mallards face-off for a second time in four days and the first 1,000 kids 12-and under will receive an IceHogs replica youth jersey from Feldco Windows, Siding and Doors.
