Clippers Lose Sixth Straight

Columbus Clippers News Release

Behind a fantastic start by Tom Cochran, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs held on for a 4-2 win over Columbus at Huntington Park.

Lehigh Valley got off to a rollicking start with a big second inning. During that frame, Steve Susdorf clubbed a two run shot over the right field wall. Derrick Mitchell also added a solo shot that landed in the left field bleachers as the Iron Pigs jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Columbus would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Jeremy Hermida crushed a solo homer into the Wendy's Hamburger Balcony in right. Through the first six innings of play, that was the only form of offense for the Clippers as they had a tough time against veteran left Tom Cochran. Cochran restricted Columbus to one run on three hits while striking out six and walking one.

The Iron Pigs would tally another run in the top of the eighth thanks to some inept defense by Columbus. With Jermaine Mitchell taking his lead from first, Clippers reliever Clay Rapada threw over to first to keep Mitchell close. Rapada's throw was nowhere near first, as Mitchell headed to second. Mitchell made the turn as he motored toward third. Chun Chen's throw to third was wild, allowing Mitchell to gallop on home for the fourth run of the night for Lehigh Valley.

Columbus would try to rally in the bottom of the ninth. They loaded the bases with one out. Tm Fedroff lined a single into right field, drawing the Clippers to within two. Unfortunately, Juan Diaz grounded into a game ending 6-4-3 double play as the Iron Pigs took game one of this four game series, sending Columbus to their sixth straight loss in the process. Cochran (W, 3-2) was awarded the win for Lehigh Valley. Danny Salazar (L, 1-2) who struck out nine in five innings, took the loss for Columbus. Mauricio Robles (S, 1) picked up the save for the Pigs.

Iron Pigs and Clippers will renew acquaintances with one another on Saturday night. Columbus will tap the talents of righty Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-3, 4.33). Lehigh Valley will go with right-hander Tyler Cloyd (1-5, 7.59) as their starter on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
