Clemente, Mavericks Stop Mallards 3-1

INDEPENDENCE, MO - Kenton Miller, Brandon Smith and Sebastien Thinel scored a goal apiece and Mike Clemente made 31 saves as host Missouri Mavericks defeated t he Quad City Mallards 3-1 Saturday night. In the wake of the loss, the Mallards remain tied in the Central Hockey League standings with the Denver Cutthroats, six points ahead of the ninth place Bloomington Blaze in the race for the final CHL playoff spots.

The Mavericks grabbed a 2-0 lead by striking twice late in the first period. Each team was down a man when Miller rifled home the opening goal from the high slot at 15:54 of the first. With just 1:21 left in the first Smith doubled the Missouri lead with a backhander from the slot.

The Maverick lead stretched to 3-0 when Thinel pounced on a loose puck in the slot at 5:41 of the second period.

Matt Duffy's drive from the high slot spoiled Clemente's shutout bid at 14:09 of the third period but did not alter the eventual outcome

The Mallards return home for a rematch with the Mavericks tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m. Tomorrow is a Family Skate Day presented by Genesis Health System. Fans can bring their skates and join the Mallards on the ice after the game. After tomorrow's contest, fans will also have a chance to meet all of their favorite Mallards at a post-game event at the Doc's Inn Bar & Grill. The Doc's Inn is located at 985 Avenue of the Cities in Silvis.
