
Cleaves returns to Fayetteville

GREENVILLE, S.C., February 21 - Guard Mateen Cleaves has returned to the Fayetteville Patriots roster after completing a pair of 10-day contracts with the Seattle SuperSonics. The Patriots waived guard Cliff Hawkins to make room for Cleaves.
Cleaves, 6-2, 210, will join the Patriots (6-22) in Austin for Thursday's game against the Toros (18-12) at the Austin Convention Center. The former Michigan State All-American has played in 167 career NBA games and has averaged 11.2 minutes, 3.6 points, 1.9 assists and 1.0 rebounds since being the 14th overall selection in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons.
Cleaves averaged 18.5 minutes, 7.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds in two games with Fayetteville before earning his GATORADE Call-Up. He is playing in his second NBA D-League season after suiting up for 42 games for Huntsville in 2003-04 and averaging 29.4 minutes, 13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists.
Hawkins played in 14 games (nine starts) for the Patriots, averaging 27.6 minutes, 9.5 points and 6.1 assists.
