Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Clearwater Threshers snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning on Friday, and fended off the Charlotte Stone Crabs' rally in the ninth to earn a 2-1 victory in the series opener on Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
Clearwater had one down and runners at the corners in the eighth, when Logan Moore's sacrifice fly to left plated pinch-runner Angelo Mora to push across the eventual winning run.
With the win, the Threshers (9-29) snapped a five-game losing streak.
Ethan Stewart started and battled his way to a successful five innings, as he held Charlotte (19-21) to just one run on five hits and three walks.
The Stone Crabs plated their lone run off Stewart in the third inning. A walk and a single put a pair on with one out and, after Stewart induced a fly ball for the second out, Tyler Goeddel broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single to center.
Clearwater was held off the board through five innings by rehabbing right-hander Alex Colome, but the Threshers got to reliever Jeff Ames (1-4) in the sixth.
With one out, Art Chales dropped a double into left-center field that was trapped by a diving Andrew Toles. Ames got Andrew Knapp to strike out, but Harold Martinez came through with a clutch single to plate Charles and tie the game at one.
The Threshers threatened with a pair in scoring position and two outs in the seventh, before pushing across the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Charles struck out to start the inning, but reached base after a wild pitch got past catcher Justin O'Conner on the third strike. Mora entered to pinch-run, and went to third on a Martinez single up the middle.
Moore then hit a sinking liner that left fielder Marty Gantt ran down, but it was deep enough to permit Mora to tag and score to give the Threshers a 2-1 lead.
Lee Ridenhour (1-4) earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings, surrendering one hit while striking out two. Ramon Oviedo set the side down in order in the eighth, before a walk and two-out single set up men at the corners with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
Guth entered the game with the potential tying and winning runs aboard, and induced a groundout off the bat of Leonardo Reginatto to end the ball game and secure his second save.
Clearwater will try to make it two straight on Saturday as the Threshers take on the Stone Crabs at 6:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 5:45 p.m.
