EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers walked away with a 7-4 victory over the Wilmington Sharks on Saturday night. Edenton (12-3, 24-19) defeated the Sharks for the first time this season, while Wilmington (11-6, 27-17) saw a four-game winning streak end.
Eric Scheuermann earned the win for the Teal and Black. Scheuermann surrendered two runs on five hits while walking one and fanning eight batters in five innings. John Russell hurled the final four innings to pick up his first save of the summer. Russell allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts.
Mike Castellani took the loss for the Sharks. Castellani (6-3) lasted five innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with fives strikeouts.
Wilmington broke open the scoring early in the first inning. Clark Scolameiro led off with a double, coming home on Mark Donadio's single in the next at bat. Two wild pitches, sandwiched around a stolen base by Donadio, brought in another run to give the Sharks a 2-0 advantage.
The Steamers responded quickly in the bottom of the inning. Richie Cunningham smacked a home run to left field in the leadoff at bat before back-to-back groundouts put two away for Tony Rosselli. The Steamers' right fielder extended the inning with a single, and Thatcher Coleman put the Clams up 3-2 with a two-run shot to left.
Edenton added to its lead in the third inning. Cunningham and Trey Hair knocked consecutive singles to start the frame. In the next at bat, Aaron Aucker cracked a double to right-center, and Cunningham was punched out at the plate to leave two runners in scoring position. After a strikeout, it looked like Coleman ended the inning with a popup back to the mound, but the pitcher Castellani let the ball drop and the Steamers plated two runs to take a 5-2 lead.
The Clams tacked on two more runs to take a five-run advantage into the eighth before the Sharks struck back. Three singles loaded the bases with no outs, and a groundball to short from Grant Koch brought in a Wilmington run to move the score to 7-3.
The Sharks tacked on one more run in the ninth, but their attempted rally fell short.
