Edenton Steamers News Release

WILMINGTON, NC - The Steamers broke out of their shells, propelled by the right arms of Jesse Morris, John Williams and the bat of Josh Hampton, cruising to a 10-0 victory over the Sharks at Buck Hardee Field on Thursday night for their first win of the season.

Jesse Morris (Wofford College) got the nod for his first start of the 2013 campaign and he did not disappoint, picking up seven strikeouts and allowing only one hit through his five innings of work.

For the Sharks, left-handed pitcher Noah Smallwood made his first start of the season for Wilmington.

Both starting pitchers allowed two hits through the first three frames until Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) connected for an absolute moon shot that cleared a 15-foot protective net above the left field wall after a Laz Villa (Reedley College) double for a 2-0 Steamer lead. The long ball was the first home run of the season for Edenton this season.

The Hampton home run was the only miscue by Smallwood and he departed trailing 2-0 after five innings, allowing five hits and striking out four.

The Wilmington Bullpen and defense did Smallwood no favors in the top of the sixth. Ryan minter came into the ball game allowed three straight singles. The hits were combined with two errors in the field by the Sharks and they led to two Steamer runs for a 4-0 lead.

Morris was masterful in his first Coastal Plain League action, going five innings, allowing only two hits and fanning seven Sharks hitters, picking up his first win of the season in the process.

John Williams (George Mason University) came into the game and kept the zeros coming; pitching four shutout innings to close out the shutout Steamer win.

For the Steamers, their offense had a coming out party in Wilmington, scoring in three straight innings from the sixth through the eighth to blow a close 2-0 game wide open and eventually cruising to a 10-0 win.

Hampton was the big bat in the Steamer lineup on this night, finishing four-for-five, including the big two-run blast, a triple and two singles and driving in four runs. Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado), in his first game picked up two hits and three RBIs.

Steamers travel home followed by the Sharks for a Friday night ballgame at Historic Hicks Field between these same two teams; first pitch at 7:00 pm.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.

Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 62 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
