Edenton Steamers News Release

COLUMBIA, S.C - Adam Kirsch hit a three-run double in the top of the ninth to give the Edenton Steamers (39-10, 19-4) a 4-1 win over the Columbia Blowfish (30-19, 13-8) at Capital City Stadium on Saturday night.

Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) made his eighth start of the season and it was a good one.

Miller gave up a run in the top of the first on a two-out double by Allen Staton and an RBI single by Chase Shelton for a 1-0 Blowfish lead. After that Miller settled in and did not allow another run while pitching eight solid innings for the teal and black to improve to 5-1 on the season. Miller allowed eight hits, with one walk and he struck out four.

David Duncan of the Blowfish matched Miller zero for zero from the second inning through the seventh.

On two separate occasions Edenton got a runner to third base with no outs and Duncan stranded him there to hold the 1-0 lead. Duncan departed after seven shut-out innings for Columbia allowing only two hits and one walk; he added twelve strikeouts on the night. At one point Duncan retired 10 straight Clams.

After a scoreless eighth inning by Derek Smith, Edenton loaded the bases in the top of the ninth against Smith trailing 1-0. Columbia went to their bullpen and brought in Hunter Privott. Privott got Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) to hit into a fielder's choice where Nick Thompson was put out at home. Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) came up next and laced a line drive double over the head of the right fielder Ryan Bull that cleared the bases and gave Edenton a 3-1 lead. For Kirsch he extended his franchise doubles mark to 22 on the season and now sits just one shy of tying the CPL record. Two batters later Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) reached on an error that allowed Kirsch to score for a 4-1 lead.

Beau Beadreau (Flagler College) came into the game and retired the Blowfish in order in the ninth to close out the 4-1 win and pick up his first save of the season.

With Edenton's win over Columbia they clinch the CPL's second-half East Division title over. For the Steamers it is their sixth straight half division title, a new CPL record for consecutive half division titles.

Edenton travels to Asheboro tomorrow to take on the Copperheads for the second time this summer before coming home Monday to wrap up the 2013 regular season against Peninsula. Edenton will start the Petitt Cup playoffs on the road in game one and the opponent is yet to be determined.
