EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers put up an impressive 28 runs en route to sweeping the Petersburg Generals in a doubleheader on Monday night. Edenton (9-2, 21-18) set a franchise record with 26 runs in game two, while Petersburg (5-6, 13-23) surrendered a season-high 19 hits in game two.
John Russell got the win for the Steamers in game one. Russell (2-0) hurled the final 3.2 innings of the continued game, holding the Generals scoreless on three hits while fanning eight batters. Coulton Lee earned the game two win for Edenton. Lee (1-0) allowed one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts over six innings.
Michael Kammerer took the loss in game one for the Generals. Kammerer (0-2) gave up one unearned run on just two hits and two walks to five strikeouts over four innings. Baylor Sundal received the game two loss. Sundal (3-3) recorded just two outs while allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks.
Game one resumed in the bottom of the fourth with Edenton leading, 1-0, and the score did not change until the Steamers plated two runs in the fifth. Bobby Schuman connected for a one-out single to put a runner on for Mitchell Price, and the Clams' left fielder cleared the fence to give Edenton 3-0 advantage they would not relent.
The Teal and Black put on an offensive clinic in game two. Edenton jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first, an inning highlighted by three consecutive RBI-singles for Zack Jones, Ben Prada and Richie Cunningham with two outs.
After Caleb Hicks cracked a leadoff homerun in the second, the Steamers piled on eight more runs in the third. Third baseman Aaron Aucker stole the show with a grand slam, and Price knocked his second homer of the day, a three-run shot to put the Clams up 14-1.
Tony Rosselli mashed the third Steamer dinger of the game in the fifth inning to put Edenton up by 15, and the Teal and Black finished off their scoring with a ten-run seventh. Stefan Van blasted the second grand slam of the night, and Aucker put another ball over the wall for the Clams' third grand slam, and his second.
The Edenton Steamers hit the road to take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Tuesday. The Steamers return home to host the Petersburg Generals for their final Way Back Wednesday night.
