Church Stresses Fundamentals During First Workout

New Haven County Cutters News Release

If championship baseball teams are built around pitching and defense, as the old adage goes, then the New Haven County Cutters got off to a good start on Monday. First year Manager Mike Church got a good look at his team for the first time and even though the start time of the workout was delayed slightly because of some morning showers, the team still practiced for nearly four hours, focusing primarily on the defensive basics of baseball.

"It was a very clean showing for a first day defensively," Church said. "We have a heady group of players here. We worked on cutoffs, relays and bunt defense."

The pitchers joined in on the defensive situational work, as well. The practice concluded with players taking batting practice and completing a physical.

Church noted that all 26 players arrived on time and the general physical condition was quite good. The workout scheduled for Tuesday will be very similar. Intra-squad games will take place on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

The Cutters' home opener is Memorial Day, May 30, at 6:05 against the Grays, the newly formed Can-Am League traveling team. Season, group and individual game tickets are available at Yale Field or by calling 203 777-5636. Information and tickets can be obtained at www.CuttersBaseball.com.
