Church Sets Opening Series Pitching Rotation; Alexander Handed Home Opener
May 25, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
Manager Mike Church has had a lot to think about in the days leading up to his first game as a manager, especially when it comes to naming his pitching rotation, which features six legitimate starting candidates. Church has announced the rotation for the first series, plus the first two home games.
Southpaw Jordy Alexander, who was selected for the All-Star Game last year before an elbow injury caused a premature end to his season, will be given the ball in the Cutters' home opener on Monday, Memorial Day, at 6:05 against the Grays. It will actually be the fifth game of the season for the Cutters, who travel to Quebec to play Les Capitales in the season opening series.
On Thursday, the league-wide opening night, Nick Maness takes to the mound for the Cutters. Maness was once a member of the New York Mets 40-man roster.
The remaining three games of the series will be started by Ryan Bonesio, Josh Tomsu and Tim Keinath. Bonesio and Keinath both started for the Cutters last season, with a combined record of 10-14. Tomsu was a 10-game winner in the Frontier League in 2004 and was named an All-Star.
Rolando Valles, another experienced southpaw, will complete the first cycle through the rotation by pitching on Tuesday.
In roster moves to get to the 24-man limit, righthanded pitcher Mike Luzim and infielder Dennis Hine have been signed. Luzim, a rookie, last pitched at St. Joseph's College (Suffolk, NY). Hine, also a rookie, is from Milford and played college baseball at the University of Bridgeport and Allegheny College. Pitcher John Magaletti has been released, along with infielder Hector Cruz.
The complete 24-man roster:
Pitchers (13): Jordy Alexander, Ryan Bonesio, Courtney Hall, Tim Keinath, Sean Kramer, Mike Luzim, Nick Maness, Shane Moran, Nick Rowland, Jarrett Starwarz, Josh Tomsu, Rolando Valles, Andy Weimer
Catchers (3): Nick Hiter, Andy Larned, Eddie Wilson
Infielders (5): Jeff Brooks, Dennis Hine, Bill Peavey, Keith Stegbauer, Chas Terni
