Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, CA - The Fresno Grizzlies, Fresno Fuego, and A-G Sod Farms have donated turf from Chukchansi Park to local organizations undergoing field renovations in the Central Valley. The sod used to cover the baseball infield in order to make use of the facility for football and soccer over the winter, has been removed and distributed to several schools and youth baseball organizations over the last several days.
Following the conclusion of the 2008 Pacific Coast League season, the Chukchansi Park infield dirt and pitching mound were covered with a mix of Bermuda and Rye grass to prepare the multi-purpose stadium for football and soccer during the fall and winter months. With Opening Day 2009 rapidly approaching on April 9th, the grass has been removed as the field is prepared for baseball season.
The extracted turf has been donated to four Valley organizations undergoing extensive field renovations this spring: Sunnyside Lone Star Little League, Easton/Carruthers Youth Baseball, Washington Union High School, and Kingsburg High School. Approximately 13,000 square feet of turf were removed from Chukchansi Park and distributed to these organizations.
"The Fresno Grizzlies are privileged to operate in such a beautiful and versatile ballpark," said team Executive Vice President & General Manager Andrew Stuebner. "We're thrilled to be able to reuse the sod that made Chukchansi Park a multi-purpose venue during the offseason in a way that aids the Valley baseball and softball communities and helps to grow those games in and around Fresno."
The Fresno Grizzlies open the 2009 campaign on Thursday, April 9th when they welcome the Portland Beavers to downtown Fresno. Single-game tickets for the 2009 season will go on sale on Monday, March 16th at 9:00am. For information on season tickets or mini-plans, both on sale now, visit the new FresnoGrizzlies.com or call the Grizzlies front office at 559.320.HITS.
