Wausau Woodchucks News Release

Wausau, WIS - It's opening week in Wisconsin in the Northwoods League presented by Edvest. The Wisconsin Woodchucks beat the Rockford Rivets, 4-2, Sunday afternoon to complete a two-game sweep and start their first winning streak of the season.

Josh Goulet (Plymouth State) provided the eventual winning runs for the 'Chucks with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning. Goulet poked a fastball from Jack Ganath down the first base line to drive home Jonathan Foster (Auburn) and Cole Daily (Notre Dame).

Caleb Dougherty (Abilene Christian) started on the mound for the Woodchucks and threw three-plus innings, conceding two runs (one earned) while striking out three. He had to leave the game after a one hour, 33 minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning.

After the delay, four 'Chucks relievers contributed scoreless innings: Bryce Welborn (Abilene Christian University), Alex Lewandowski (Northwoods), Jesse Philp (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), who also got the win, and Gordon Cardenas (Auburn), who also got the save.

Dallas Gibson (Lipscomb) supplied two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts in his first appearance of the season.

Mac Caples (Virginia Tech) homered in the bottom of the fifth, his first of the season and the team's third. That tied the game at two and set the stage for Goulet's single.
