Chucks Take Game One of Double-header, 8-3

WISCONSIN RAPIDS-The Wisconsin Woodchucks used the strength of an outstanding start by Nick Greene to down the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 8-3 in game one of a day-night double-header.

The Rafters capitalized on two Woodchucks defensive mistakes in the first as they got on the scoreboard first. Lead-off batter Garret Nash hit a fly ball to right field that Seth Batty misplayed, allowing Nash to go to second with a double. With one out, Alex Edward bounced out to Garret Yrigoyen, but the throw to first base was dropped by Derek Peterson, putting runners on the corners with one out. Brandon Hohl followed the error with an RBI single, and a second run scored on an RBI-groundout by Sam Montgomery.

The Woodchucks tied the game up in the third with a couple of runs of their own. Brian Carroll led off the inning with a single and stole second base before being advanced to third by a groundout by Danny Susdorf. Batty followed that up with an RBI-double, scoring Carroll. Batty then stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Escobar, Jr., making it a 2-2 game.

With the score tied at three in the seventh, the Woodchucks took the lead as Seth Batty scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle DeMerritt.

After the first inning, Nick Greene shut down the Rafters, giving the Woodchucks exactly the kind of start they needed. Greene pitched seven and one third solid innings for the ‘Chucks, allowing only two earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts. Greene left with the lead in the eighth as Anthony Drobnick came on in relief.

The Woodchucks gave Drobnick some breathing room in the ninth as they picked up four insurance runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by Austin Coleman. Drobnick retired the Rafters in order in the ninth, giving the Woodchucks the win in game one.

Greene earned the win for the Woodchucks, improving his record to 3-2 on the season. Drobnick picked up his fourth save.

The Woodchucks advanced to 9-13 on the second half while the Rafters fell to 9-13. The two teams will square off again at 6:05 this evening for game two of the double-header at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids.
