Chris Berkeley of Shadow Ridge High School wins Gladiators’ Ironman Award

Las Vegas, NV, Sept. 8, 2004 – The Las Vegas Gladiators, in partnership with News 3’s “Operation: Football” and US Army, awarded Chris Berkeley of Shadow Ridge High School the Gladiators’ Ironman Award for the second week of the 2004 high school football season.

The Gladiators and US Army, will honor Berkeley by making a $250 donation to the Shadow Ridge High School athletic department.

In Shadow Ridge’s first game of the season, the senior quarterback led the Mustangs to a 68-0 victory over Rancho on Friday, September 3. Berkeley led the Mustang offense by completing 12 of 15 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another score. He also contributed on defense, intercepting a pass to set up another touchdown.

Berkeley has excelled off the field well as he holds a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

This award recognizes student-athletes who have achieved both on the playing field and in the classroom. These achievements are reflective of the players in the AFL, where the majority of the athletes have skills as two-way performers.

Athletes are nominated for the award by their respective schools based on their weekly performance. Winners are recognized with a certificate presentation at their school with Gladiators’ head coach Ron James and News 3 sports anchors Mitch Roberts or Rick Strasser. The presentation is featured on News 3 each week.

The US Army provides direction for detailed planning, preparation and execution of the full range of tasks necessary to provide relevant and ready landpower to the Nation while maintaining the quality of the all-volunteer force.
