Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings and Johnstown Tomahawks went back and forth for 60 minutes, but it would be the visiting Tomahawks who would get the best of their hosts, as they were able to escape with a 3-2 victory on Saturday.

12:48 into the first, and working with their second power play of the game, Kalamazoo was able to jump out to an early edge. Patrick Spellacy got a feed from Taylor Burden along the left-wing side, and was able to rip a wrister into the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season. It would be the only tally of the frame, as the Jr. K-Wings took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room.

Trailing by a goal and on their second power play of the game, the Tomahawks were able to draw even at a goal apiece. Ian Spencer got a feed at the point and blasted a slapshot, which passed the screen in front of Marcus Due-Boje and ended in the back of the goal for the fourth goal of the season by Spencer.

In the early stages of the third period, Kalamazoo was controlling the tempo in the Johnstown zone. Mark Esshaki slid a pass over to the left side, where Robbie Payne was there to hammer a one-timer that beat Johnstown goalie Chris Truehl through the five-hole. The goal for Payne was his team-leading 27th goal of the season.

The one goal lead wouldn't last long for the Jr. K-Wings, as Johnstown was able to claw right back into the contest. Just under five minutes later, Jeff Bergh crashed the net and was able to poke home his 9th of the campaign on a quick wrister from the right side. The goal tied the game at two apiece and set the tone for the final 12 minutes of play.

With the back and forth action heading into the last two minutes of the game, it would be Johnstown who would capitalize on their opportunities late in the game. Brandon Reinholz went straight to the goal off a shot from Jake Fairchild, and was able to stuff home the rebound for his 18th of the season. It would give the Tomahawks a 3-2 lead that would stand as the eventual game winner.

The Jr. K-Wings will take the ice again on Sunday, March 24th, as they take on the Johnstown Tomahawks in the second of two consecutive games.

Sunday's contest will be held at the Borgess Health Rink Inside Wings West, with the puck dropping at 2:00 p.m.
