CHL Top 10 Rankings
October 19, 2017 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the Week 5 edition of the CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2017-18 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.
Claiming the top perch for the first time this season is the Portland Winterhawks. Winners of six consecutive games, the high-flying Winterhawks are outscoring opponents in spades, averaging 5.8 goals per game through nine contests this season. Cody Glass, the talented playmaking prospect of the Vegas Golden Knights, leads the club in scoring with 17 points (4G-13A) in nine outings.
Joining the Winterhawks in the top three ranks is the Swift Current Broncos. After going on a run that featured eight consecutive wins to start the regular season, the Broncos were finally felled by the Edmonton Oil Kings earlier this week. Still, the Speedy Creek boys sit atop the East Division and have positioned themselves well early in the campaign.
Falling from the top spot last week, but remaining within the country's top five is the Victoria Royals. Like the Broncos, the Royals went eight games before suffering a regulation defeat. After being edged by the Tri-City Americans in overtime, the Royals dropped a second consecutive outing, this time to the Spokane Chiefs before rebounding for a key victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds
Maintaining the WHL's strong presence in the CHL Top 10 is the Moose Jaw Warriors, landing in the ninth position. Moose Jaw rattled off consecutive victories over the Edmonton Oil Kings and Vancouver Giants before suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of the Kootenay ICE on Tuesday in Cranbrook.
Rounding out WHL representation just outside the ranks is the Brandon Wheat Kings, who earn an honourable mention this week.
