CARSON, CA - Chivas USA extended their winning-streak to a season-high three straight on Erick "Cubo" Torres' dramatic game-winner in stoppage time to propel the Rojiblancos to a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Impact. The striker now has a team-best 12 tallies on the season, as Chivas wrapped up their three-game, eight-day stretch with maximum points Saturday night at the StubHub Center. With the result, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy secured his third consecutive clean sheet.
Torres got into range and fired his first strike from about 25 yards out in the 24th minute but sent the attempt wide left. The Goats picked up the pressure on Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins beginning in the 41st minute, when forward Leandro Barrera worked his way around two defender and got off a shot on frame from outside the right edge of the box that was batted away by the keeper and cleared out.
Four minutes later, midfielder Marvin Chavez - making his first start for the Red-and-White since concluding his World Cup participation - squared up to his marker near the right corner of the box, created space for himself and fired toward the second post. The winger's left-footed attempt, however, traveled just wide, sending the sides into halftime locked at zero.
Kennedy kept the shutout intact in the 57th minute, turning away Andres Romero's shot from outside the box to the left of the arc sent toward the far post. The Red-and-White netminder dove to his left to prevent the score and Impact forward Jack McInerney's follow-up attempt sailed well over the crossbar.
The Rojiblancos answered back with a chance of their own in the 63rd minute on the end of Mauro Rosales' free kick from outside the right edge of the box. The entry was initially cleared out but Eric Avila collected the rebound outside the area. The midfielder then got off his follow-up shot, but Perkins was able to send it just over the crossbar with a leaping fingertip save.
With three minutes of stoppage time added, midfielder Marco Delgado worked the ball toward the edge of the 18-yard box and fired at goal. The attempt crashed off a Montreal defender and Torres collected the loose ball, tipping the rebound in the air to himself to set up his own volley. With his back to goal, Torres then unleashed a sensational sidewinding volley over his left shoulder from 12 yards out and to the back of the net inside the right post to give the Red-and-White the 1-0 win in dramatic fashion.
Chivas USA now hit the road to face Western Conference for Vancouver Whitecaps FC next Saturday at BC Place. The match will mark the second leg of the season series and will be broadcast live on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM beginning at 7 p.m. (PT).
