CARSON, Calif. (Monday, January 2, 2006) - Chivas USA's coaching staff are preparing for the January 20, 2006 MLS Superdraft in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Chivas USA have the Draft's first pick. At the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, which was Chivas USA's first in franchise history, the Red-and-White chose University of South Carolina goalkeeper Brad Guzan for its first draft pick, making Guzan the highest-picked goalkeeper in MLS draft history.
GUADALAJARA UPDATE: Club Deportivo Guadalajara, Chivas USA's sister team, resume training this week in preparation for its participation in the third annual InterLiga, the qualifying tournament in which eight Mexican teams will fight for two spots in the prestigious Copa Libertadores 2006. The tournament will be played between January 4 and 14. Chivas de Guadalajara will once again be under the command of Hans Westerhof, who returns to Guadalajara after coaching Chivas USA in the second half of the 2005 MLS season. GUZAN READY FOR U.S. TRAINING CAMP: Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan was called up by United States men's national team coach Bruce Arena for a six-week camp to take place at The Home Depot Center starting on Wednesday January 4, 2006, making Guzan the first Chivas USA player to be called up to the U.S. senior national team. The call-up is the first for the 21-year-old Guzan, who previously represented the U.S. at the U-18 level, after posting impressive numbers during his rookie season with Chivas USA.
