SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (Sunday, March 1, 2009) - Chivas USA earned a 4-0 victory over the Ventura County Fusion in a preseason exhibition played tonight at Cougar Stadium on the campus of the College of the Canyons in Valencia, Calif. Proceeds from the match went to the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, which provides financial and emotional support to children and their families facing childhood cancer in Santa Clarita and the surrounding area. More information on the Foundation can be found at www.mhf.org.
Jonathan Bornstein started the scoring for the Red-and-White in the 8th minute, receiving a pass in the box from Eduardo Lillingston and slotting a low shot past Trevor Stiles in the Fusion net. Chivas USA struck again in minute 37, and Lillingston again started the play; his header from a Jamie Franks corner kick was cleared off the line, but the rebound fell to captain Jesse Marsch, who pounded the ball home from close range.
Both teams made many substitutions to start the second half, and the match opened up in the 66th minute when Chris Cortez hit a 25 yard shot that fooled goalkeeper Jordan King and found the corner of the net. Justin Braun, who entered the match for Lillingston to start the second session, capped the scoring in the 77th minute, taking a through ball from Franks past King and shooting into the empty goal. Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy played 90 minutes in net for Chivas USA, earning the shutout.
With the win, the Red-and-White's preseason record now stands at 4-1-1 (W-L-T), with matches against a pair of MLS sides coming up this week. The team is off tomorrow and trains Tuesday at The Home Depot Center before facing the San Jose Earthquakes in a scrimmage on Wednesday, and will also play the Chicago Fire next Saturday, also at The Home Depot Center.
