Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, March 8, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today that the club has signed 2014 Third-Round draft pick Kristopher Tyrpak from Houston Baptist University. After being selected in January's Major League Soccer SuperDraft, the forward earned his spot on the Red-and-White through his strong performance during 2014 preseason camp.
"Kris is an extremely talented left-footed attacker who has a set of very special and uncommon skills for a player that young," stated Chivas USA Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. "He has tremendous speed and is an excellent dribbler. He loves to score and is well aware of where the goal is. Kris has great potential and will be a very good addition to our team."
The 21-year-old striker made 17 starts in 18 appearances in his senior year with the Huskies and finished second for the team lead with five tallies. Tyrpak's team-high seven assists and 17 points recorded earned him Western Athletic Conference First-Team honors. He was also the Atlantic Soccer Conference Rookie of the Year in 2010.
Since joining Chivas USA's camp, Tyrpak has appeared in seven preseason matches. The attacker most recently went the full 90 minutes in the Goats' scoreless tie with the Colorado Rapids on Feb. 26 in the 2014 Desert Diamond Cup.
The SuperDraft pick will be eligible for selection among Cabrera's list of 18, when Chivas USA host the Chicago Fire in the club's 2014 MLS Season Opener. The contest, which will be televised nationally on UniMás, will also mark the first of 34 regular-season games programmed to air on recently-named broadcast partner ESPN Deportes Radio KWKW 1330 AM. Tickets to the Red-and-White's opener are available for purchase at www.cdchivasusa.com/tickets or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS1.
