Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
HOUSTON - Chivas USA fell 5-1 Saturday night to the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. After the clubs exchanged goals from Houston's Giles Barnes and Chivas' Eric Avila, the Dynamo pulled away with four unanswered scores in the second half on a pair of brace's from Barnes and Boniek Garcia. Forward Will Bruin also recorded a goal on the night to help the Texas side secure points at home.
The Rojiblancos defense withstood early pressure from the home side as they managed to get into their offensive third to test goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. The Red-and-White captain denied Houston in the sixth minute on Bruin's first-time attempt toward the near post from inside the box on a cross from the right side.
Forward Erick Torres tried to give Chivas the lead in the 12th minute with a curling shot from outside the box, but Houston keeper Tally Hall was able to secure the shot. The Goats continued to try and get into range shortly after when midfielder Bryan de la Fuente sent a cross from the left wing that went through untouched and into Hall's hands.
Chivas had a promising look at taking the lead in the 33rd minute after Torres brought down a long ball over top as he crossed into the left side of the box, but Houston's defense was able to close in on the striker in time to deflect Torres' shot and cause the threat to travel wide right of the post.
The Dynamo broke the scoreless tie in the 39th minute when Brad Davis played a ball from the right side off a corner kick that found Barnes on top of the six-yard line for the header.
The Rojiblancos responded with the equalizer in the 50th minute when Avila created a turnover in the offensive half of the pitch and worked the ball toward the arc, where he laid a pass off to Carlos Alvarez on his left. The midfielder gathered the pass and fired a shot past Hall's right that crashed into the post, but Avila followed up the strike and headed the rebound into the back of the net to even the match at 1-1.
Houston would reclaim the lead four minutes later when Ricardo Clark threaded a pass from inside the midfield line to Barnes, who collected the ball and fired from the 18-yard line past Kennedy to record his second goal on the night. Bruin's goal in the 63rd minute doubled the Dynamo's lead when he received a pass from Warren Creavalle as he made his run behind the arc and placed it inside the left post to take a 3-1 advantage. Garcia would put the exclamation point on the night with his two late scores beginning in the 79th minute. Garcia received a pass from Bruin inside the box and was able to capitalize on his opportunity. Garcia would go on to convert on a penalty inside the right post in the 91st minute to cap off the night.
Chivas USA now return home to prepare to square off against in-state and Western Conference rival the San Jose Earthquakes in the series finale. The match will kick off at 8 p.m. (PT) on Sunday, Sept. 29, at the StubHub Center and will be televised in English on KDOC-TV and in Spanish on UniMas.
