Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
VANCOUVER, B.C. - Chivas USA added to their season-high winning-streak by winning their fourth consecutive match, 3-1, Saturday night at BC Place over Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Red-and-White were led by striker Erick "Cubo" Torres' team-high 13th goal of the season to extend his scoring run to five straight games. Agustin Pelletieri and Leandro Barrera pitched in with their first goals of the season for the Goats and Mauro Rosales delivered three assists in the rout. Vancouver's Carlyle Mitchell gave the home side the initial lead in the first half. With the result, Chivas has now secured points in their last five League contests.
Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy turned away Whitecaps FC's first look at goal in the 12th minute by coming off his line and punching away Kekuta Manneh's cross from the left side. The Goats answered back three minutes later when Rosales shot directly at goal off a set piece from the left seam. The midfielder's attempt, however, was collected by Vancouver keeper David Ousted.
The Caps' took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Pedro Morales played a ball into the box from the right side off a corner kick. Mitchell then got on the end of the entry and headed the ball down from seven yards out for his first tally of the season.
With a minute left in the first half, Chivas' Marvin Chavez looked to set up his teammates in the attacking third in search of the equalizer. The attacker got around his marker in the final third and laid the ball off to his right to Pelletieri about five yards behind the arc. The midfielder squared up to goal but sent his strike off frame, as the Rojiblancos went into the half trailing by one.
The Red-and-White leveled the match at one in the 47th minute, as Pelletieri capitalized on his second shot of the contest after getting on the end of a Rosales corner kick whipped in from the left side. As the ball curled toward the six-yard box, Pelletieri made his cut and headed the ball to the back of the net past Ousted's right from seven yards out.
Torres was spot on with his second header in the 81st minute to beat Ousted once again and claim the 2-1 lead for the visitors. The 21-year-old drilled a cross from Delgado sent in from right seam as he made his run toward the far post. Rosales was credited with an assist on the sequence and the score marked Torres' fourth consecutive game-winning tally and fifth straight go-ahead goal.
Barrera put the exclamation point on the club's first-ever victory at BC Place with a long-range goal in stoppage-time assisted by the facilitator Rosales as the "ËCaps were caught in transition without a keeper in goal. Ousted was moved into the opposing box on a last-minute corner kick and left his net exposed, as the second-half sub capped off the 3-1 result.
Chivas USA now begin preparations to head East next week to face Eastern Conference side D.C. United in an interconference showdown on Sunday, July 20. The match will mark the only meeting between the clubs during the regular season and will be televised on Univision Deportes Network and KDOC-TV LA56. The action can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKW 1330 AM beginning at 5 p.m. (PT). For more information follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.
