Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
TORONTO (Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014) - Chivas USA fell, 3-0, in their lone meeting of the regular season against Toronto FC Sunday afternoon at BMO Field. The Reds were led by first-half tallies by Jackson Goncalves and Luke Moore, and a third from Gilberto Souza in the second part of the contest.
The Red-and-White generated promising looks in their final third begging in the third minute when striker Felix Borja attempted to get on the end of a cross sent into the box from the left wing, but his attempted header deflected off a Reds defender and out of play for a corner kick.
By the 12th minute, the Goats took their third corner kick of the contest, which was whipped into the mixer from the left side by midfielder Marvin Chavez. However, center back Bobby Burling was unable to get his header near the back post on frame.
TFC took a 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute when Souza set up Goncalves with a short back-heel pass inside the box. The midfielder then squared up to goal and found the back of the net with a left-footed strike that had its trajectory altered after deflecting off a Chivas defender.
The Rojiblancos nearly leveled the match in the 43rd minute when right back Donald Toia sent a cross from the right side that found Eric Avila behind the six-yard box. With his marker in front of him, the midfielder settled the entry and squared up to goal, but drove his left-footed shot wide.
Instead, the home side doubled their lead two minutes into first-half stoppage time on the end of a corner kick sent in from the left side by Michael Bradley toward the back post. Defender Nick Hagglund headed the entry back toward the front of goal for Moore to knock in his first-time volley.
In the early minutes of the second half, Borja looked to help his side cut into the deficit when he pushed the ball up the left seam and fired his left-footed strike with defenders trailing closely, sending his attempt off frame.
The Reds added another goal in the 54th minute when Souza cleaned up a low corner kick played in from the right side that was redirected and traveled across the face of the goal to take a commanding 3-0 lead and go on to secure the three-point result at home.
Chivas USA will return home briefly before heading back on the road to face conference foe Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday. The match will mark the third and final leg of the season series and will be televised on KDOC-TV LA56 beginning at 1 p.m. (PT). The action can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM.
