Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. - Led by striker Erick "Cubo" Torres' team-high 10th goal and goalkeeper Dan Kennedy's first clean sheet of the season, Chivas USA downed Real Salt Lake, 1-0, Saturday night at the StubHub Center. With his tally, Torres surpassed Cuauhtemoc Blanco's all-time league scoring record among Mexican-born players with 17.

The Goats tested backup goalkeeper Jeff Attinella early and got off their first warning shot in the sixth minute when right back Donald Toia got deep into RSL territory and fired a strike from the right wing. Toia's attempt, however, sailed over the crossbar.

Playing a man up, Chivas began peppering the away side's goal beginning in the 13th minute when forwards Leandro Barrera and Torres got off strikes from the left side of the box two minutes apart. Toia again pushed up from his back line spot in the 21st minute to unleash his second strike of the night, but the rising liner from 20 yards out cleared the top of the crossbar once again.

The Rojiblancos broke through in the 35th minute when Torres drilled a perfectly timed right-footed volley past Attinella after getting on the end of left back Tony Lochhead's cross from the left seam to take the 1-0 advantage.

RSL looked to go in search of the equalizer and brought on a pair of subs in the 63rd minute. Yet, it was Chivas who continued to apply pressure in their attacking third. Mauro Rosales nearly extended the lead in the 64th minute when Torres chipped a pass to him into the right side of the box. The midfielder brought down the pass off his chest and shot at goal, sending the close-range attempt high.

Looking to add to their lead, the Red-and-White continued getting numbers into the box. Five minutes after coming on as a sub in the 81st minute, Carlos Alvarez just missed putting the exclamation point on the night. The midfielder dispossessed an RSL player inside the box and squared up to goal from eight yards out, only to send his shot wide right, keeping the Goats' three-point result locked at one-nil for good.

Chivas USA now have a short turnaround to prepare for a mid-week showdown against in-state rival San Jose Earthquakes. The Wednesday match at Buck Shaw Stadium will mark the second leg of the season series and will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (PT).
