Chinooks Use Big Innings to Defeat Honkers

(Rochester,MN)-- The Lakeshore Chinooks put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the first and second inning in a 16-3 win over the Rochester Honkers on Friday, August 9, at Mayo Field.

Andrew Stevenson, Jared Fon, Mike Hollenbeck, Aaron Machbitz, and Sawyer Polen picked up hits and Mike Papi reached on error as the first six batters in the game scored for the Chinooks to jump ahead to an early 6-0 lead.

Max Murphy (Bradley) blasted a solo homerun, his fifth of the season and second in as many nights, to put the Honkers on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 6-1 after one inning.

Cody Bobbit and Fon delivered two-run singles to highlight an eight-run top of the second inning for Lakeshore. The Chinooks had built a 14-1 lead after an inning and a half of play.

Kevin Barker (UC Davis) and Reid Roper (Illinois) picked up back-to-back singles to set up a sacrifice fly from Mike Friel (Hofstra) to score the second run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Chinooks added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning before the Honkers added a third run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) reached on a lead-off double and came in to score on a RBI single from Roper. Roper led the Honkers offense with a 3-for-4 performance on the night.

Donnie Hissa earned the win (6-3) for Lakeshore, as he allowed one run on five hits in six innings. Rochester's starting pitcher Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) took the loss as he allowed six runs on five hits in one inning. Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) allowed five hits in 4.2 shutout innings out of the Honkers bullpen.

Rochester (10-23, 28-40) will host the Duluth Huskies for a pair of games to conclude the regular season. The series will begin on Saturday, August 10, at 7:05 p.m. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is scheduled to start for the Honkers.
