
Blue Anchors Blank Rafters to End Losing Skid

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors defeated the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 6-0 Thursday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park.
Both starting pitchers were cruising along and it took until the sixth inning for the Blue Anchors to put some runs on the board against Greg Maisto. Shea Molitor doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a Tim Cusick groundout. Michael Barash drove in the games first run with a single to left and gave Alexandria all the offense they needed. Aaron Gretz followed with a single into center putting two on. Andrew Mulato drove a pitch into right-center field for a base hit scoring Barash and making the score 2-0 in the Anchors' favor.
Alexandria added on in the seventh as Keegan Dale drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a Kris Goodman sacrifice. Molitor drew a walk putting a couple of runners on. Brent Mueller came in relief and walked Tim Cusick to load the bases. Barash delivered another RBI single and a Gretz sac fly put the Anchors ahead 4-0. Then with two outs, Mulato brought in Cusick for the fifth run of the night.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Anchors added on an insurance run. Dale hit a one-out double and then Molitor singled with two outs giving Alexandria a commanding 6-0 lead.
Spencer Koopmans pitched his best game of the year going eight shutout innings giving up nine hits and a walk striking out six hitters. Jake Hanzalik came in relief to finish the game and fired a scoreless frame allowing just a base hit.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Spencer Koopmans (SP) - In likely his final start as an Anchor, the UC Davis northpaw pitched his best game yet. He lowered his ERA by nearly a run and it sits now at 4.84. For his effort, Koopmans earned Pitcher of the Night honors from the Northwoods League.
Notes: Koopmans pitched a season-high eight innings...It was his third quality start...Molitor has a hit in all five of his games and three is his season-high...Cusick drew his team-leading 34th walk of the season...The Blue Anchors offense again lead the Northwoods in team average at a .285 clip...Friday is the final home game of the 2013 season for the Anchors and fans can enjoy two-for-one Pabst Blue Ribbons thanks to Beverage Wholesalers-Miller...The game is also Fan Appreciation and the team will be giving away prizes and a firework show will end the evening...On the hill is Scott Sanderson (3-3, 8.25)...The game, starting at 7:05 p.m., can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
