Portland Chinooks News Release
The Portland Chinooks, one of the International Basketball League's oldest teams dating back to the league's formation in 2005, have a new home court for the 2012 season and will be looking to christen it with their first championship.
The Chinooks' new home venue will be the 212 Sports Complex in Clackamas. The state-of-the-art multi-sport facility, which opened last fall, features two full-size basketball court and also hosts facilities for baseball and football. The centerpiece of the complex is a hardwood court previously used by the NBA's Miami Heat at American Airlines Arena. The facility is located at 11791 SE Highway 212 in the Emmert International Business Park.
The Chinooks, through the guidance of head coach Terrence Dickens, have had talented squads in previous seasons and have always been serious contenders come playoff time. Their most successful season came in 2009, when they posted a 16-9 record and reached the finals of the IBL playoffs. Last season, Portland finished 12-12 and lost to the eventual league champions and cross-border rivals, the Vancouver Volcanoes, in the first round of the playoffs.
Dickens has a proven track record of helping his players advance their careers with teams in upper-level leagues around the world. Brian Morris, who averaged 21.4 points and 12.2 rebounds per game for the Chinooks last season, is now playing in Portugal, and Jeremiah Dominguez, a former Portland State standout, has been playing in Mexico's top league for two seasons after playing for Dickens in 2009. Also, former Chinook Michael Parker has developed into one of top players in Japan's BJ League for the last five years after helping lead Dickens' 2007 squad to the IBL Championship game.
"We are looking forward to 2012 season, especially more time with the team. It is important to have a great group of players that play as a team, help each other and stay focused as we look forward to the playoffs. As we move to the 212 Sports Facility to host our games we will also add in a youth program, engaging the community with our team," shared Chinooks team owner Terry Emmert, when asked about the outlook for the Chinooks in 2012.
"We are truly international and the players we took to China this past fall in partnership with the United States Basketball Academy enjoyed the competition and hospitality and you will see us add some of those who contributed to the Chinooks this season. We are actively looking for a few other IBL hopefuls for our team who have the right attitude, practice and play together to win a championship, losing is not in our vocabulary," added Emmert.
The team will hold tryouts in the Pacific Northwest soon to bolster their roster for the upcoming 2012 campaign. Details on the date and location of the tryouts will be announced soon.
