Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Super Fritz & Friends Fund Supports Children and Their Families at UC Davis

Throughout September, Sacramento Republic FC and UC Davis Health work together to drive awareness during Childhood Cancer Awareness month. The Indomitable Club is highlighting the stories of brave survivors, Indomitable doctors, nurses and families, and providing ways for fans to connect and learn more about the impacts of childhood cancers.

Republic FC fans can join the club in supporting the inspiring and life-changing work at UC Davis Health by contributing to the Super Fritz & Friends fund.

Inspired by the care of Fritz Stark, aka "Super Fritz," who was diagnosed with leukemia at just 2 ½ years old in 2018. But procedures and hospital stays couldn't keep this high-energy kid down, and friends and neighbors started calling him "Super Fritz" for his can-do attitude. This superstar is now cancer-free and will soon celebrate his eighth birthday.

While Fritz's story carries forward with a bright next chapter - he received a hero's welcome when we returned to school in 2018 - not every story ends that way. Ruth and Paul Flowers, friends of the Stark family, and patients experienced a diagnosis firsthand.

Following a personal cancer diagnosis turned "false alarm," in which Paul witnessed first-hand the care and generosity that UC Davis Health patients receive, the Flowers wanted to ensure that others facing the disease were shown the same love and attention that they received. Together, the Stark and Flowers families helped create the Super Fritz & Friends Fund to support the work of the heroes in the Pediatric Hematology Oncology and provide patients and families with the additional resources they need.

The fund is aimed at helping to facilitate a newly created Resource Specialist position within the division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology. The position helps bridge the gap between the traumas of battling pediatric cancer and the families who navigate the treacherous fight against it. The Resource Specialist stays by the family's side through the whole journey, helping the family wade through challenges related to health insurance, finances, social services and employment.
