Chiefs Win 6-4 in Columbus Comeback

Columbus, Ohio - In the third game of a four game series, the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washingtion Nationals beat the Columbus Clippers 6-4. The Chiefs relied on a five run seventh inning to win their first game of the series. Syracuse starter Shairon Martis earned his first win of the season and Seth Bynum hit his third home run in 2010.

The Clippers scored the first runs of the game in the third inning. With two outs and two runners on base, shortstop Jason Donald lined a two RBI double into the outfield to give Columbus a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Columbus (16-10) scored again when Brian Buscher knocked in Jordan Brown.

Syracuse (15-10) had only one base runner through the first five innings against Columbus starter Josh Tomlin. In the sixth inning, Chiefs second baseman Seth Bynum led off with a solo home run. Syracuse had two more runners reach base on two walks, but the inning came to a close with the Chiefs down 3-1.

The seventh was the big inning for Syracuse as Mike Morse led off with a walk. Chase Lambin followed with a strikeout. Chris Duncan was the next batter and Morse advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher Carlton Smith. Duncan singled home Morse to make it 3-2 Columbus. Seth Bynum then singled and was followed by Carlos Maldonado who flied out to center for the second out.

Eric Bruntlett was the next batter and he doubled to score Bynum and Duncan. After his at bat, Pete Orr hit an RBI single to score Bruntlett. The next batter was Kevin Mench who reached on an infield single, and Orr scored on a throwing error by Clippers third baseman Brian Buscher. The Chiefs emerged from the top of the seventh with a 6-3 lead.

Columbus would score one more run in the bottom of the seventh to pull to within 6-4, but came no close. Joel Peralta pitched the ninth inning for the Chiefs to earn his sixth save of the season.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs and Clippers will play the fourth and final game of the series at Huntinton Park. Chuck James (2-0, 2.70) will start for Syracuse and Carlos Carrasco (2-1, 3.49 ) will start for Columbus. First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 a.m.
