Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have signed defensemen Trevor Hendrikx for the 2009-10 season.
"The Chiefs are happy to add a defenseman of Trevor's quality. He is a versatile player who has a good blend of skill and toughness. He will be a very positive addition to our blueline," said Chiefs head coach and director of hockey operations Jeff Flanagan.
A 6-2, 205-pound defensemen, Hendrikx was drafted twice by the Columbus Blue Jackets; in the 9th round of the 2003 NHL Entry draft (#283 overall) and in seventh round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft (#201 overall). After the 2003 draft Hendrikx opted to stay in juniors and set career highs with the Peterborough Petes in the 2005-06 season (47A, 56P, 123 PIM).
The Ontario native made his debut for the Petes (OHL) at the age of 16. During his second season with the Petes, Hendrikx led the team in PIM (128). Throughout his career in Peterborough, Hendrikx' penalty minutes kept climbing, especially in his third season (2003-04) when he amassed 208. In 2004-05 Hendrikx showed his scoring touch by totaling 15 goals, the most during his junior career.
Hendrikx broke into the pro ranks with the Dayton Bombers as a rookie in 2006-07. That season, he was second among Bomber defensemen in goals with. In 2007-08 Hendrikx spent the season with the Elmira Jackals and set career highs for games played (72) and penalty minutes (170).
Injuries and call-ups limited Hendrikx to 49 games with Johnstown last season, but he still managed to set a career high, and lead Chiefs' defensemen, with nine goals. He continued to show his toughness by leading the team with 145 penalty minutes. His strong play in Johnstown earned him his first call up to the AHL where he spent two games with the Syracuse Crunch.
Hendrikx is expected to play this weekend when the Chiefs visit Trenton (10/30) and Reading(10/31-11/1). Hendrikx will wear number 5 on his sweater.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice on Wednesday, November 11 against Reading at 7:35. The Chiefs will honor military veterans in a special pregame ceremony, and a special Veterans' Day price of $5 is being offered to all active military members as well as veterans. The Chiefs will also wear special camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off live immediately following the game. Good seats are still available.
