Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - Victoria hockey fans will have one of their own to cheer on as Victoria native Tyson Barrie of the Kelowna Rockets has been named to the roster for Team WHL in the Subway Super Series game in Victoria on November 25, the Western Hockey League announced on Thursday.
Barrie, in his third full season with the Kelowna Rockets, is one of just a handful of players that will play in both B.C. games in the Subway Super Series, November 25 in Victoria and November 26 in Kelowna.
"I'm really excited to be playing for Team WHL," said Barrie, 18. "That was one of my goals this year. I'm fortunate that the games happen to be in Victoria, where I'm from and in Kelowna where I play. I'm looking forward to getting back to Victoria and to play there."
Barrie played minor hockey for the Juan De Fuca Grizzlies. His appearance at the Save on Foods Memorial Centre will mark the first time he has played in the Victoria arena.
"This is a great opportunity for Victoria fans to get to see Tyson play in a high level game," said Kelowna Rockets general manager Bruce Hamilton. "Everyone of these players is hoping to get invited to Team Canada's final evaluation camp in December. How they play in this game dictates whether they get invited to the camp."
The six game Subway Super Series is used by Hockey Canada to evaluate players in advance of the World Junior Hockey Championships over the Christmas holidays. The first two games of the series are hosted by the QMJHL with the OHL hosting games three and four.
The 2009 SUBWAY(r) Super Series will take place November 16 - 26 and marks the seventh straight year that teams of CHL All-Stars have competed against Team Russia in preparation for the World Junior Hockey Championships
"This is a special event for Victoria and for Kelowna," said Hamilton. "We wanted to bring this game to these two centres for the fans. The great thing is there are people who don't get a chance to see WHL games who will be able to get tickets."
Tickets are now on sale to the general public through www.selectyourtickets.com. Game tickets are available at Victoria's Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre Box Office (250-220-7777) or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
Team WHL was selected by a special committee of WHL General Managers along with Al Murray, Hockey Canada's Head Scout for the Canadian National Junior Team, as part of the selection process for the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships.
"The WHL is fortunate to have so many good players to choose from for the SUBWAY(r) Super Series," commented Willie Desjardins of the Medicine Hat Tigers, who will coach Team WHL and serve as Head Coach for Team Canada. "This is a great opportunity for our players to compete against a very talented Russian team and showcase themselves to Hockey Canada for future International events."
