Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA (July 13, 2005) - Johnstown Chiefs Executive Vice-President and General Manager Toby O'Brien announced today that they have re-signed center Chad Cavanagh and defenseman Ian Manzano.
"Anytime you put together a team, you have to have veteran leadership and Chad and Ian provide just that for us. They have both been here for a couple of seasons and know what it takes to succeed," said O'Brien.
Cavanagh, 27, played in all 72 games for the Chiefs last season scoring 16 goals and 37 points along with 106 PIM. The 6'0, 190 LBS native of Peterborough, Ontario began his professional career with the Chiefs during the 2003-04 season where he played in 69 games, scoring 10 goals and 28 points.
"We look for Chad to jump up this year and play a more offensive role with the team. Towards the end of last season he was one of our top scorers and emerged as one of the best face-off men in the league."
Prior to joining the Chiefs, Cavanagh played four seasons with Acadia University of the Canadian Inter-University Sports League beginning in 1999-2000 when he appeared in 26 games scoring 11 goals and 23 points. The following season, as a sophomore, he scored 9 goals with 12 assists in 28 games. He played only 13 games in the 2001-02 season but finished he senior year with twenty five points, the most of his college career. Cavanagh was a ninth round draft pick (232nd overall) of the Washington Capitals in 1996.
Manzano, 28, appeared in 71 games for the Chiefs last season scoring a goal and 22 points. He finished the season with the AHL's Bridgeport Soundtigers playing in their final three games. The 6'1, 200 LBS native of Dorval, Quebec has played two and a half seasons with the Chiefs, scoring 7 goals and 53 points in 185 games. Manzano was one of the Chiefs alternate captains last season. He has also seen action in the AHL with the Binghamton Senators and the Saint John Flames.
"Ian is one of the best defensive defensemen in the league. He is one of the back bones of our team. To have him back is a big step for our team in our goal to winning a Kelly Cup," O'Brien added.
Manzano played collegiate hockey for Clarkson University (ECAC). In 134 career games for the Golden Knights, Manzano scored 9 goals and 23 assists (32 PTS).
