Pawtucket, R.I. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 5-4 on Sunday night at McCoy Stadium. Syracuse rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit for a victory in the penultimate ballgame of the 2010 campaign.
Pawtucket (65-78) jumped in front in the second inning against Chiefs starter Shairon Martis. Aaron Bates tripled to right field to lead off the inning and two batters later Jack Hannahan doubled to right to push Bates in. The PawSox led 1-0 after two and would score again in the third.
Niuman Romero led off with a double, Josh Reddick reached on an error, and Bubba Bell walked which set up a bases loaded, none out situation for Pawtucket. Jason Varitek, in his first game with the PawSox on a rehab assignment, lofted a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Romero to score and make the score 2-0.
In the fifth Syracuse (76-77) cracked the code of Pawtucket starter Fabio Castro. The lefty had struck out six through four innings, but the Chiefs would get to him with seven runners coming to the plate in inning number five. Chase Lambin walked in the leadoff spot and was plated on a double off the bat of Pete Orr. Jamie Burke followed with an RBI double of his own to tie the game at two. Two batters later, Michael Martinez tore an RBI single to left, scoring Burke, and Syracuse led 3-0.
In the eighth, Seth Bynum used a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 and Chase Lambin hit his 15th home run of the year to put Syracuse up 5-3.
Syracuse reliever Atahualpa Severino worked into trouble in the 8th inning loading the bases without recording an out. Adam Carr came on to clean up the mess and allowed just one run in the inning. He then pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the save and the victory.
The Chiefs will conclude the 2010 season on Monday afternoon in Pawtucket. Righty Erik Arnesen (6-7, 3.91) is set to throw for Syracuse against righthander Ramon Ramirez (4-5, 3.03) for Pawtucket. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00.
