Chiefs Nipped By Jackals

December 20, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

ELMIRA, NY. - The Johnstown Chiefs were felled in the shootout by the Elmira Jackals on Sunday night and lost by a final score of four to three.

The Jackals had the jump early in the game and put the pressure on the Chiefs throughout the first few minutes of the game. Former Chief Jarrett Konkle put the home team on the board by scoring on a wraparound 1:25 into the contest. Kris Mayotte made seven saves over the rest of the period, and the Chiefs were able to control much of the play for the rest of the frame. Johnstown outshot Elmira 10 to eight in the first, including some great chances while shorthanded, but a few spectacular saves by Julien Ellis kept Johnstown off of the board.

The Chiefs were left shorthanded for the first 1:52 of the second period as Russ Sinkewich was serving out the remainder of a slashing minor. Johnstown held Elmira at bay with a strong penalty kill effort and allowed for Mike Bartlett to tie the game up at the 8:22 mark. His 10th of the season was a beautiful tip-in goal off of a feed from the left wing by Bryan Marshall. Chanse Fitzpatrick also added an assist in his Chiefs' debut against his former club. Elmira battled to retake the one-goal lead with Max Gratchev netting his 10th at 14:02.

Johnstown and Elmira played a scintillating third period that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Chris Zarb tied the game at two with the Chiefs' lone power play goal of the night at 12:53. Off of the faceoff to begin the power play, Zarb took a quick wrist shot that was blocked back to him. The second try whipped through Ellis' legs for Zarb's fourth of the season. Olivier Proulx looked like he had notched the game winner when he responded with a power play goal at the 17:57 mark of the third. Zarb took a high-sticking penalty when he missed on a poke check. Johnstown was forced to pull the goalie for the extra attacker and Fitzpatrick scored the most dramatic goal of the Chiefs' season, tying the game with four seconds left.

Neither team could score in overtime despite coincidental minors that left the teams skating 3-on-3 for 1:07. In the shootout, the Chiefs' third and fourth shooters, Fitzpatrick and Marshall scored to respond to goals from Justin Donati and Keegan Dansereau. Proulx would notch the Jackals' third goal of the shootout and Ellis turned aside Moises Gutierrez to earn the extra point and the win.

Mayotte turned in 28 saves in taking the loss while the Chiefs were 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the PK.
