Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have signed forward/defenseman Jozef Sladok for the 2009-10 season.
"Jozef is a player that (former coach) Ian Herbers became very familiar with during his time in the OHL, and someone that we sought out when he became available. He is a huge presence who can play wing or defense. The Chiefs are excited to have a player in our lineup like Jozef that our opponents will have to be aware of, and our fans will enjoy watching apply his trade," Vice President and General Manager Bill Bredin said.
Standing 6-5 and weighing 220 pounds, Sladok joins the Chiefs for his second professional season. He spent his rookie campaign with the Corpus Christi IceRays of the Central Hockey League and made a big impression in a short amount of time. Known for putting up more penalty minutes than points, Sladok did just that with 154 in only 29 games. That total ranked third on an IceRays team that had six players top 100 PIMs. The Zvolen, Slovakia native did find the scoresheet twice with a goal and an assist.
Sladok got his first taste of North American hockey when he joined the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers for the 2006-07 season. Sladok skated in 28 games and put up 100 penalty minutes for that team which went on to win the OHL West Division, the OHL playoffs, and two games in the Memorial Cup playoffs. The next season Sladok more than doubled his PIM total with 223 in 60 games, and also had his best offensive output with four assists.
Sladok becomes the eighth Chief under contract for 2009-10. He joins Erik Felde, Matt Robinson, Sean Berkstresser, Ryan Menei, Mike Knight, Greg Gallagher, and Kyle Bushee.
