Bensenville, Illinois- Josh Balch converted the deciding penalty shot as the host Chicago Steel defeated the RoughRiders 3-2 in a shootout Friday night.
Along with Balch, Dean Chelios and Andrew Miller also converted in the shootout for Chicago while Mike Seidel and Jeff Costello scored on their penalty shots for the Riders, who did earn one point for the shootout loss.
The Steel was just over a minute away from a regulation win, but the Riders- who had emptied their net for an extra attacker while on the power play- evened the score at two when Scott Winkler buried a rebound with just 1:11 left in the third period.
The Steel had taken a 2-1 lead just 23 seconds into the third when Balch scored from the goalmouth.
The Riders twice came from behind to deadlock the game in regulation- first when Seidel fired the puck home from the slot to tie the score at one at 3:42 of the second period.
The Steel had opened the scoring while on the power play when Chelios poked the puck in from the doorstep at 17:41 of the first period.
