Chicago Storm News Release
(HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL.) - After trailing the Milwaukee Wave for the better part of three straight quarters, forward Carlos "Chile" Farias (pictured above) scored in the fourth quarter to put the Chicago Storm up 10-9. Chicago held on with good defense and stellar goalkeeping by Jeff Richey, who won his 13th consecutive regular season game, to secure the 10-9 win for the Storm. The victory marked the third straight for Chicago, the best start to any season thus far by the Storm. Chicago now looks for their fourth win, next Saturday, November 17th against former U.S. Goalkeeper Tony Meola and the New Jersey Ironmen.
The Storm out shot the Wave 4-1 in the first quarter but neither team could gain an edge. The scoring drought finally broke in the second quarter midfielder Matthew Stewart. Stewart ran the ball down the center of the field and sent a pass to forward Carlos "Chile" Farias. Farias held the ball along the far boards, and then unexpectedly "Chile" banked a pass off the boards that fell perfectly to the right foot of Stewart who buried the ball in the lower right hand corner of the net. That marked the last lead Chicago would have for quite a while.
Forty-eight seconds after the Stewart goal, forward Tyrone Gordon blasted a three-point goal from the Storm's yellow line past a diving Jeff Richey for the 3-2 lead. After Chicago defender Chris Brisson was given a two minute penalty for holding, Milwaukee forward Greg Howes extended the Wave lead to 5-2 on the power play goal.
Chicago drew the game to within one point when defender Branko Savic sent a pass to target man Mark Ughy. Ughy held the ball and then dropped off a pass to the on rushing Savic. Savic dribbled the ball twice before blasting a shot past Wave âkeeper Nick Vorberg making the score 5-4, earning his first goal of the season. Milwaukee's leading scorer for the last three seasons, Greg Howes scored his second of the night to make it 7-4 going into the half.
After ten minutes of back and forth play in the third quarter, Chicago picked up the tempo. Midfielder Mariano Bollella stole the ball from a Wave defender and worked his way towards the Milwaukee Goal. Bollella sent a pass to the center of the goalkeeper area that "Chile" flicked in for his third goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Stewart added his second goal of the night. On the power play, After Joe Di Buono was called for holding for Milwaukee. The Storm power play worked the ball from side to side. Eventually Mark Ughy sent a pass to Stewart who positioned himself directly to the left of goal. The El Paso native took a right footed shot from the improbable angle that went in far post to put Chicago up 8-7.
Long time defender Troy Dusosky regained the lead for the Wave on a restart. With less then two minutes to go in the period, Joe Hammes flicked the ball to Dusosky who nailed the ball into the net, making it 9-8 in favor of Milwaukee.
Late in the fourth quarter, John Ball, who normally plays midfield but moved to defender due to injuries, led the Storm offense. Ball found "Chile" inside the Wave goalkeeper area. Farias took one step before nailing the ball in. The Wave weathered Wave after Wave offensive barrage but held off for the 10-9 win.
Chicago moves to 3-0 on the season, the best start of a season in team history. Milwaukee falls to 1-2. The Storm's next game is Saturday, November 17th at 7pm at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates against former U.S. Goalkeeper Tony Meola and the New Jersey Ironmen.
