Chicago Storm Buries Cleveland 8-4

January 22, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Chicago Storm News Release

Chicago – The Chicago Storm snapped a seven game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the Cleveland Force tonight at the UIC Pavilion, improving their record to 7-12 in the MISL. Storm midfielder Novi scored two goals and two assists and Nino DaSilva added a goal and assist in his Storm debut. The Storm will continue their home stand this Sunday afternoon when they will face off against the Milwaukee Wave at 3:00 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion. This will be the sixth installment of the I-94 rivalry with Milwaukee leading the series 3-2 and can be heard on www.chicagostorm.net in English and Univision Radio WRTO 1200 AM in Spanish.

"This was a very good game for us," said Storm Head Coach and GM Frank Klopas. "We came out and competed throughout the entire game. We knew that to win this game, we would have to come out with intensity and pride. We have shown what we are capable of and we just needed a bit of confidence. Sunday will be another good match-up for us as Milwaukee is a very good team."

Storm forward Mark Ughy registered the game-winning goal at 9:56 of the third quarter. Novi fired a shot that ricocheted off of Ughy in front of the net and bounced past Cleveland goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin to give the Storm a 5-3 lead.

In the first quarter, the Storm came out of the gate quick, scoring at the 1:03 mark after Gaston Pernia found Novi, who recorded his 15th goal of the season after he flipped a shot from the right side just outside the yellow line past Elfvin. Less than a minute later, Ughy scored his first goal of the game and first in a Storm uniform at 2:32 of the first quarter.

Cleveland cut into the Storm lead after John Ball connected with forward Chris Handsor, who fired a shot past Storm goalkeeper Danny Waltman and into the top left corner making the score 2-1. Storm forward Jorge Valle extended the Storm's lead to 3-1 with a goal at 2:26 of the second quarter. Valle's tally was assisted by midfielder/forward Nino DaSilva, who signed a contract with the Storm earlier this morning and made an impact throughout the game.

The Force retaliated and scored two goals before the half as Ball and Joel Bailey registered to make it 3-3.

Chicago pulled away from the Force as Matthew Stewart scored his eighth goal of the campaign as he capitalized on an error by the Cleveland defense and slotted a shot into an open net to make it 4-3.

The Storm did not look back as the defense stifled the Force offense by only allowing 12 shots on goal for the entire game. Waltman only had to make three saves to earn the win as the Storm also registered five blocks.

DaSilva was at it again as he scored the final goal of the game to make it 8-4 at 8:31 of the fourth quarter. The St. Viator High School product gathered a pass from Novi, maneuvered around a Cleveland defender and fired a right- footed shot that blazed past substitute Force goalkeeper Jim Larkin to cap off a stellar performance in his debut.

The Chicago Storm would like to thank all of their fans and reward them for their loyalty under adverse weather conditions. Any fan holding a ticket to tonight's contest between the Storm and the Force will be able to redeem their ticket for a free ticket to the Storm's February 11th contest against the Milwaukee Wave at 7:30 p.m. CT at the UIC Pavilion. Fans can contact the Storm front office at (312) 226-GOAL (4625) or by presenting the ticket at the UIC Pavilion box office on the night of the game. Thank you for your support.
