Chicago Storm News Release
Chicago, IL (Friday, January 21, 2005) â The Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) executed a trade today acquiring midfielder Nino DaSilva from the St. Louis Steamers in exchange for cash considerations and a fourth round selection in the MISL Amateur Draft. The Storm signed the Chicago-born DaSilva to a multi-year contract and he will be available for the "Yellow and Black's" game tonight against the Cleveland Force at 7:30 p.m. CT at the UIC Pavilion. The game can be heard live on www.chicagostorm.net and www.broadcastmonters.com and on Univision Radio WRTO 1200 AM in Spanish.
"I am very excited to be here in Chicago, playing in my hometown and playing in front of family and friends," said DaSilva. "I am honored to be able to be a part of this team and coached by Frank Klopas, who has been a friend of my family's for many years. I feel this is the place I need to be at this point in my life and I look forward to helping the team in any way I can."
DaSilva, 25, has scored 136 goals and 94 assists for 345 points in 153 games, since he joined the league with Kansas City for the 2000-01 season. In his rookie campaign, DaSilva played in 37 games and scored 38 goals and 32 assists for 105 points and earned MISL Rookie of the Year honors. The 5'8", 155-pound sparkplug followed-up his rookie success by tallying 40 goals and 36 assists for 115 points in 43 games during 2001-02 and then continued his torrid scoring pace with 37 goals and 16 assists for 94 points in 33 games in 2002-03. In each of his three seasons with the Comets, DaSilva finished second on the team in scoring.
"I have known Nino since he was first kicking a ball and walking and I knew he would be a good soccer player," said Storm Head Coach and GM Frank Klopas. "For me, Nino grew up in Chicago and should be in a Storm uniform. He is an excellent player and will make our team better."
The former member of the United Stated Under-20 National Team was traded to the San Diego Sockers for the 2003-04 season and produced 17 goals and eight assists for 25 points in 29 games. Prior to the start of the 2004-05 season, the St. Viator product was dealt to the St. Louis Steamers in a high-profile trade for St. Louis' leading goal scorer Steve Butcher. He played in 11 games, scoring four goals and two assists for six points before being waived by the Steamers.
DaSilva also holds two appearances for the United Stated National Futsal Team with both games being played in 2004. He attended St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, IL, where he captained the soccer team to a 22-4-1 record his senior year and a third-place finish in the state. During his senior season in 1996, he earned 44 goals and 15 assists in 26 games playing along side Jarrett Payton, the son of former Chicago Bear legend Walter Payton. He also competed for the Chicago Sockers playing alongside current Chicago Storm teammate Fred DeGand. As a member of the U.S. U-20 squad, DaSilva helped the team qualify for the FIFA World Youth Championship Nigeria 1999. He was also signed to a professional contract at 17 years old by the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer in 1997 and was with the team until 1999. DaSilva was then acquired by the MetroStars and has played in 13 MLS games from 1997 through 2000.
DaSilva will wear jersey number 77 for the Storm, which is the same number his father Batata wore with the Chicago Sting (MISL) and Power (NPSL). Batata was a teammate of Klopas' and Storm Assistant Coach Oscar Albuquerque. Batata was a member of the Bazilian National Team.
