CHICAGO - Following a victory against the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Shock (12-5), the Chicago Sky (4-9) hits the road this week as they face off against the Minnesota Lynx (8-7) on Tuesday, July 1 at 7 p.m., the Indiana Fever (7-8) on Wednesday, July 2 at 6 p.m. and the winless Atlanta Dream (0-15) on Saturday, July 5 at 6:30 p.m.
On Thursday, June 26, the Sky lost 89-79 to the Phoenix Mercury (7-7). Chasity Melvin earned a double-double, leading the Sky with 15 points and 19 rebounds, but the Sky was unable to overcome a 15-point fourth quarter deficit.
The Sky snapped a five-game losing streak on Saturday, June 28 when they defeated the Detroit Shock with a convincing 76-59 win. A 10-0 second quarter run pushed the Sky's early lead to 15 and the team never looked back, leading by double digits the rest of the way. Four Sky starters scored in double figures, including Candice Dupree who led the team with 18 points, Dominique Canty and Jia Perkins with 14 points apiece and Melvin, who added 10 points. The Sky's mix of zone and man-to-man defense held the Detroit starters to only 21 points.
PERKINS PERFECT 35 TIMES IN A ROW, BREAKS 4-YEAR-OLD RECORD With her last made free throw on Thursday, June 26 vs. Phoenix, Jia Perkins made her 29th consecutive free throw and broke the WNBA record for consecutive free throws without a miss. The previous record was 28, set by LaToya Thomas of San Antonio in 2004. Perkins' last miss was the first of 2 free throws at 2:01 in overtime vs. LA on June 3. She stayed perfect against Detroit on June 28, going 6-6 from the line and extending her streak to 35.
SKY VS. LYNX HISTORY The Sky is 3-2 lifetime against the Minnesota Lynx, with one loss to the Lynx in the teams' first meeting earlier this season. On May 29, the Lynx defeated the Sky, 75-69, with the Sky coming within two points with two minutes left in the game. Sky rookie Sylvia Fowles earned her first WNBA double-double with a team-high 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
SKY VS. FEVER HISTORY The Sky is 2-6 lifetime against the Indiana Fever. This is the Eastern Conference rivals' first meeting this season. In 2007, the Sky defeated the Fever 68-65 on July 21, with Perkins scoring a game-high 17 points. In their most recent meeting on August 7, 2007,
the Sky lost 75-70 in overtime, with Melvin scoring 26 points and Dupree contributing an astounding 20 rebounds.
SKY VS. DREAM HISTORY The Sky is 2-0 against the expansion Atlanta Dream in 2008. The Sky's first win came on June 6, with an 86-72 victory in Atlanta. Dominque Canty and Jia Perkins led the Sky with 16 points each. The following day, the Sky defeated the Dream 91-70 at home. Dupree contributed 20 points, and Perkins added 19.
