Chicago Stars FC News Release

Bridgeview, IL (March 1, 2009) The Chicago Red Stars have signed Megan Rapinoe, Marian Dalmy, and Ella Masar to play for the club in 2009, General Manager Marcia McDermott announced Friday. The trio of newly contracted Red Stars represents a rising presence with the U.S Women's National Team, as all three were among the 25 players chosen to train with the U.S. in advance of this month's Algarve Cup in Portugal, while Rapinoe was selected to 18 player roster.

"These three exciting players, each spectacular in her own right, when combined truly define the Red Stars style of play - technical, pacy, tough, and demonstrating a relentless attacking mentality," said Red Stars Head Coach Emma Hayes.

Rapinoe, the Red Stars first round draft pick in the 2009 WPS Draft in January, was a NSCAA All-American selection and the West Coast Conference Player of the Year during her senior year at Portland University in 2008.

"This is such an exciting day for me," said Rapinoe. "I could not be happier to be joining the Red Stars organization, this city, and I look forward so much to getting on the field come April."

Marian Dalmy, a speedy and versatile defender, earned a roster spot on the U.S. Women's 2007 World Cup team. She played collegiately at Santa Clara University, where she served as team captain in her senior and junior years.

"It's an amazing feeling to officially be a part of the Chicago Red Stars inaugural season," said Dalmy. "It will be an honor to put on a Red Stars jersey for the first time."

Ella Masar is a local success story. A native of Urbana, IL, Masar grew up playing for IWSL's Windy City Pride and the Little Illini Soccer Club. She attended the University of Illinois, where she was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year as a junior and earned back-to-back All-America honors in her final two seasons. On the international stage, Masar helped the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team win back to back Nordic Cups in 2007 and 2008, scoring twice in championship match in 2008.

"To be able to sign on the dotted line and become a member of such an amazing team and organization is a true blessing," said Masar.

The Red Stars kick off the 2009 WPS season on April 4th on the road against St. Louis Athletica at Ralph Korte Stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois

University in Edwardsville. Following a second road game against the Washington Freedom on April 11th, the Red Stars will play their historic home-opener at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois on Sunday April 19th against Sky Blue FC.
