Chicago Stars FC News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars played for the first time since they were eliminated from postseason contention, but they did not miss a beat en route to a 2-0 victory Wednesday in Women's Professional Soccer action in front of 2,173 at Toyota Park.
Veronica Boquete netted a goal in her home debut for the Red Stars, and defender Marian Dalmy added a goal as the Red Stars posted their first-ever win over Philadelphia.
Next up for the Red Stars is the team's 2010 regular-season finale at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, against the Washington Freedom at Toyota Park. The match is televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
The Red Stars improved to 6-11-6 and ended a three-game losing streak, while Philadelphia fell to 10-9-4. Chicago improved to 6-0-0 when scoring the first goal this season. The Red Stars are 0-11-3 when opposing teams score first.
Despite the loss, the Independence qualified for the postseason by virtue of Sky Blue FC's 1-1 draw against FC Gold Pride on Wednesday.
Boquete made an early impression when she scored off of a Casey Nogueira free kick in the 4th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Nogueira played the ball in from the right side and Boquete redirected it past Independence goalkeeper Val Henderson.
Dalmy tallied her first-ever WPS goal in the 54th minute to give Chicago a 2-0 cushion. Karen Carney dished the ball to Dalmy who took a 30-yard strike and found the upper left corner of the net.
Jillian Loyden made four saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Henderson had five saves for Philadelphia.
The Red Stars played without forward Ella Masar, who is recovering from nose surgery and will not be available for Chicago's regular-season finale. Red Stars forward Cristiane did not get the start, but she entered the match for Carney in the 57th minute.

POST-GAME QUOTES: Red Stars Head Coach Omid Namazi "Anytime we get that first goal it seems like if we can ride it out. TOnight was no different. we had decent spurts of play, but we could have scored a lot more. but overall, the possession wasn't as good as some of the games we've lost. having said that, i'll take the win.
"I felt our back line did a great job of containing [Amy] Rodriguez. She really puts a lot of pressure on the defense and has outstanding speed. So we dropped off. The space in front of us was pretty occupied by Formiga. She did a great job, [Katie] Chapman. We weren't worried about that space. We were worried about the space behind. I thought our back line, especially our two central defenders, did a great job."
Red Stars forward Veronica Boquete (through translator): On her delay to play: "It was very tough to know that I could not contribute. Yet because of some visa issues I couldn't get on the field and help the team and get into the playoffs. At the end of the day, it is what it is. I'm happy that now I've sorted out the visa and obviously very happy with what I did tonight."
