Chicago Stars FC News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer and United Soccer Leagues W-League affiliate Chicago Red Eleven announce that they will compete in an exhibition match at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Schwaben Athletic Club, 301 Weiland Ave., in Buffalo Grove, Ill.
The cost is only $10 for general admission at the gate, and ages 6 and under receive free admission. Players participating in the Schwaben skills clinic and open house, which runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on May 21, receive free admission to the Red Stars-Red Eleven match.
"The Red Eleven players and coaches are excited for the game versus the Chicago Red Stars," Red Eleven Head Coach David Nikolic said. "We will be one week into our own training camp and preparing for our season and there is no better way to find out where we are at than playing against full professionals."
The teams squared off last year at Benedictine University (Lisle, Ill) where the Red Stars won, 1-0. The Red Stars' goal came in the 14th minute of the first half by forward Cristiane from Osasco, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Red Stars had five shots on goal while the Red Eleven had four. Both teams had a total of four saves.
"We're pleased to be playing Red Eleven on our bye weekend," Red Stars General Manager Marcia McDermott said. "We want to continue to be a big part of the Chicago soccer community. Schwaben has a great venue for the match, and this should be a wonderful night for Chicago soccer fans."
The game is being held at the Schwaben Athletic Club, which has a long history of soccer. Schwaben has been training and fielding youth teams in the Chicagoland area since 1926. The club has been home to many top youth and adult teams.
"We are all very excited about the game being held at Schwaben," said Thomas Gansuage, Director of Coaching at Schwaben. "We are having an open house the same day and we believe that we will help draw more fans to the game. This game will showcase top-level playing, and we hope this will draw the attention of young females interested in playing soccer."
Schwaben has been in Buffalo Grove since 1970 and had its "Grand Opening Tournament" with 16 teams from the Midwest area. From then on the club has been focused on developing soccer intelligence and improving the players' communication skills, field awareness and abilities.
"The opportunity that is provided by a game like this is for the players to show the coaching staff where they are at and for the coaching staff to have a game setting with fans and the excitement of a home game to test our own players," Nikolic said.
The Chicago Red Eleven begins W-League play the weekend following the Red Stars exhibition game with a home game against the Buffalo Flash at Benedictine.
