Chicago Fire FC News Release

SEATTLE, WA - Chicago Fire midfielder John Thorrington scored in his 2010 debut, but his 28th minute penalty kick wasn't enough as Freddy Montero notched a brace to defeat the Fire 2-1 in front of a sold out crowd at Qwest Field in Seattle, WA. Freddie Ljungberg made his return to Seattle in a hard fought, hotly contested match, featuring two teams grabbing for points in the 2010 MLS Cup Playoff push, but it was Montero who stole the game with a header in the waning moments of added time to elevate Sounders FC over the Fire.

The Fire (6-7-6, 24 points) lost their second consecutive road game against a Western Conference opponent, bringing their record on the road to 3-5-2. The loss drops the Fire to fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 11 matches remaining.

The Fire withstood initial pressure from Sounders FC and set up Thorrington's spot kick when Husidic switched fields and sent a booming cross to Patrick Nyarko on the left side. The fleet Ghanaian dribbled along the touchline before sending an angled pass that was handled by an oncoming Jeff Parke. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and Thorrington clinically placed the ball into the back of the net to give the Fire a one goal advantage. The South African born, California raised midfielder returned to the field from a season-long quadriceps injury, scoring his first goal since Nov. 7, 2009.

The Seattle side leveled the match at 1-1 eight minutes later when Patrick Ianni played Tyson Wahl into space on the left side. Wahl found Montero just inside the 18-yard box with a driven cross. The 23-year-old Colombian brought the ball down with a touch, maneuvered around Fire defender Gonzalo Segares and powered the ball past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson to the far post to pull even with the Fire in the 36th minute.

Montero tallied the game winner in the 92nd minute. The plucky forward lurked near the back post, as Seattle pressured in the closing minutes of the match, rising to head home a well struck ball from Sounders FC midfielder Nathan Sturgis, who floated a lofted ball across the box. The last second effort was Montero's second goal of the game and 10th of the season.

The Fire return to TOYOTA PARK to entertain Landon Donovan, Edson Buddle and the league-leading LA Galaxy on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 3:00 PM CT (Comcast SportsNet/TeleFutura). For tickets, please call 1-888-MLS-FIRE (657-3473) or head to the club's official website at www.Chicago-Fire.com.
