Chicago Bandits News Release
AKRON, Ohio-With the game tied at 2-2 in the eight inning, the Chicago Bandits (21-16) knew it would have to score to prevent the home town Akron Racers (19-18) the last opportunity to win the game.
Chicago scored three times in the eight to break the tie and held on to win the first game of the series over the Racers 5-2 Saturday night at Firestone Stadium in National Pro Fastpitch play.
Stacy May led off the inning with a single and Kristie Fox hit a hard grounder that could have been turned into a double play or at least a fielders choice. But with May and Fox hustling, both were safe. Radara McHugh (2-3) walked Rachel Folden to load the bases. Jamie Clark came up next and once again hit a grounder that should have been an easy out. An error by the Racers allowed May and Fox to score-with nobody out. Later in the inning, Nicole Trimboli singled to score Clark and the Bandits led 5-2. All they needed to do was hold Akron.
Jessica Sallinger came on to relieve starter Kristina Thorson and with the exception of allowing one hit-a triple to Veronica Wootson-got three strikeouts to end the game.
Thorson (7-5) gave up five hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Stacy May gave Chicago a 2-0 lead in the third inning with her ninth home run of the season. Kristen Butler singled in Wootson in the fourth inning to score one run for the Racers and make it 2-1. Akron tied the game at 2-2 with two outs in the seventh. India Chiles singled and scored on a Shannon Doepking high fly single to right field.
