Bradenton Marauders News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - After seeing two different leads slip away Saturday night, the Marauders scrapped for a decisive go-ahead run in the tenth inning in a 7-6 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Publix Field.
The win was the sixth straight for Bradenton (9-5, 38-41), who will play for the series sweep in Sunday's afternoon finale.
With the score tied, 6-6, and one out in the top of the tenth, Tsung-Che Cheng stood on second base as Bradenton's extra-inning runner. Noticing a brief lapse in attention by Lakeland (6-7, 38-41) pitcher Erick Pinales as he received a routine throw back from his catcher, Cheng broke for third base on a delayed steal and drew an errant throw from Pinales, allowing Cheng to sprint home with the go-ahead run.
Marauders right-hander Carlos Campos dodged danger in the bottom of the tenth, stranding extra-inning runner Roberto Campos on third and Jose de la Cruz on first base after a one-out infield single. Campos recorded the game's final two outs on a strikeout of Daneurys de la Cruz and a deep flyout to left field by Eduardo Valencia.
The Marauders had held a 6-5 lead from the fifth inning until two outs into the ninth inning. Dante Mendoza issued a leadoff walk to Lakeland's Cristian Santana, who stole second base, and after a groundout to second base advanced Santana to third with just one out, Mendoza struck out Manuel Sequera. But with two out, Campos took a pitch in the dirt that catcher Wyatt Hendrie blocked. But after Flying Tigers manager Andrew Graham consulted with the umpires, Santana was waved home, as it was ruled that Hendrie had illegally retrieved the ball utilizing his mask, resulting in an automatic advancement for the runner to tie the score.
In the early stages of the game, Bradenton had built a 3-0 lead. Maikol Escotto hit a solo homer to left-center in the second inning, Angel Basabe tripled in the third and scored on a Jasiah Dixon sac fly, and a two-out Lakeland throwing error in the fourth plated the Marauders' third run off Flying Tigers starter Jackson Jobe. The Lakeland
Carlos Jimenez began brilliantly on the mound for the Marauders, retiring nine of his first ten batters faced in the game, including turning in an immaculate inning in the third. But in the fourth, Jimenez's second trip through the order proved burdensome. Izaac Pacheco led off with a double and scored on a double by Sequera, and Campos promptly followed with a game-tying two run homer. Jimenez recovered to record a strikeout and a groundout, but then walked Daneurys de la Cruz and surrendered a two-run homer to Valencia, giving the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
Jimenez would finish with nine strikeouts in four-plus innings, matching his career-high, but allowed five runs on six hits.
The deficit proved short-lived, as the Marauders' fifth inning saw Dixon and Jase Bowen both single in front of Rodolfo Nolasco, who swatted a go-ahead three-run homer to left field, giving Nolasco a third straight game with a home run.
Bradenton relievers Wilkin Ramos, Jack Hartman, Mitchell Miller, and Yunior Thibo all appeared ahead of Mendoza, escaping numerous jams with Flying Tigers runners in scoring position. Lakeland finished the game 3-for-21 with RISP.
The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Publix Field. The Marauders have yet to announce their starting pitcher, while LHP Carlos Pena will start for Lakeland.
