Checkers hire Tera Black as vice president
Published on October 5, 2006 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today the hiring of Tera Black as vice president. The announcement was made by Jeff Longo, president of the Checkers, from the team's office on Tryon Street.
"We are thrilled to have Tera's exceptional talents on board for us in Charlotte," said Longo. "Tera has such a wide range of strengths that will allow us to become an elite franchise on and off the ice in the ECHL."
Black comes to the Checkers after serving as the chief operating officer of the ECHL's San Diego Gulls from July 2003 - July 2006. Black was the first-ever female COO in ECHL history and only the fourth female in league history to run an ECHL organization.
"Charlotte is truly one of the best cities in the ECHL," said Black. "The extraordinary ownership in Michael Kahn, the staff, fans and facilities made it quite simple for my family and I to make the move to North Carolina. The overall hospitality of this region is tremendous and the transition from the West to the East coast has been such a positive experience."
Under Black's leadership the Gulls won the ECHL's Marketing Award and Media Relations Award during the 2005-2006 season. Black was also named the West Coast Hockey League's Media Director of the Year in 2002-03.
"Tera's ability to create all-inclusive theme nights that highlight how much fun an evening of Charlotte Checkers hockey can be - whether you are a huge sports fan or not - will help fully integrate our organization and our overall marketing strategies," said Longo.
"As the Checkers establish their Uptown personality, I hope to develop creative, original strategies to expose the true entertainment value of Checkers hockey," said Black. "Nothing that the Checkers do will be ordinary; rather we will continually be on the cutting edge of providing not just a "night out", but an experience that the entire family truly can enjoy."
Black began her career in hockey as the head athletic trainer and director of hockey operations for the Sacramento River Rats of the now-defunct Roller Hockey International. In 1997, after her stint in Sacramento, she was hired as the vice president of hockey operations for the North American Roller Hockey Championships where she remained until joining the Gulls in 2002.
"Tera's extensive sports and hockey history are evident from her most recent experience running the San Diego Gulls organization," said Longo. "Just as San Diego was highly touted for being one of the most exciting, community oriented sports properties in a city filled with similar opportunities, she will help the Checkers emerge as such within the Charlotte community."
The Charlotte Checkers open their 14th season in the ECHL Friday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 pm against the Wheeling Nailers at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
