CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Brandon McMillan put the Admirals ahead 1-0 late in the first period in Charlotte. However, the Checkers (38-23-2-3) scored three unanswered goals and goaltender Rob Madore made 37 saves as Norfolk (31-29-4-1) fell, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.

With the loss, Norfolk remains four points back of a playoff spot with 11 games remaining in the regular season. The Checkers claimed the GEICO Challenge Cup by winning the eight-game season series against the Admirals, ten points to seven.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen (18-14-1) stopped 32 of 35 shots in the setback.

The Admirals return to Scope on Friday and Saturday nights to take on the Syracuse Crunch.

Norfolk out-shot Charlotte, 17-3, in the first period and took a 1-0 lead late in the period on the power play. Chris Wagner sent a shot from the right circle that was blocked by Madore. However, McMillan found the rebound on the goalmouth and scored his eighth goal of the season at 19:34.

The Checkers tied the game at 1-1 on a power play goal late in the second period. David Marshall's shot attempt from the right half wall was blocked. The puck deflected to Beau Schmitz in the slot, and Schmitz's shot eluded the left skate of Andersen at 16:26.

Charlotte took a 2-1 lead just 31 seconds into the third period. Casey Pierro-Zabotel intercepted a Norfolk pass in the left circle and sent a shot past Andersen.

Zach Boychuk netted a power play goal at 15:25 for the 3-1 final score.

Madore (2-0-0) made 37 saves on 38 shots for the win.
