Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Kenny Smith. Smith will attend training camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Checkers.

Smith, 24, was a third-round selection (84th overall) of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and was a member of two U.S. Junior National Teams.

"Kenny is a real responsible two-way defender," said Derek Wilkinson, head coach and general manager of the Checkers. "He adds a lot of experience and stability to our blueline."

The 6-foot-2-inch, 209-pounder from Stoneham, Mass. played 48 games with the Portland Pirates of the AHL last season notching eight assists and 29 penalty minutes. Smith also appeared in 11 games with the Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL scoring one goal and three assists.

Smith began his professional career with the Grrrowl in 2004 following a four-year college career at Harvard University. In 121 games at Harvard, he registered 41 points (11g, 30a) and 181 penalty minutes. He rejoins former Harvard teammate, Dan Murphy (at Harvard 2002-2006), who agreed to terms with the Checkers earlier this month.

The 2006-2007 marks the 14th season for the Charlotte Checkers in the ECHL. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $370. The Checkers are accepting deposits on all ticket packages. Call 704-342-4-ICE (4423) to reserve your seats today.
